Today is the fourth day of the Raiders Wire’s countdown to the Oakland Raiders’ training camp which begins on July 24. Until that day, we will count down the best Raider to wear each jersey number from No. 26 to No. 1 and will now look at No. 23.
The No. 23, which has been worn by many superstars like Chicago Bulls guard Michael Jordan and Cleveland Cavaliers forward LeBron James, does not have the same prowess in the Silver and Black.
Currently, the No. 23 is worn by Raiders cornerback Dexter McDonald who is a role player at best. However, the greatest Raider to wear that number is Raiders running back Charlie Smith.
Smith played in 91 games for Oakland rushing for 3,351 yards and 24 touchdowns. He also made an impact out of the backfield as he had 1,596 receiving yards and 10 receiving touchdowns.
In addition, Smith was part of the Heidi Bowl game and is now the No. 11 leading rusher in Raiders’ history earning him the honor of being the greatest No. 23 in the proud franchise’s history.
