Today is the fifth day of the Chargers Wire’s countdown to the Los Angeles Chargers’ training camp which begins on July 29. Until that day, we will count down the best Charger to wear each jersey number from No. 30 to No. 1 and will now look at No. 26.
Currently, Chargers cornerback Casey Hayward wears the No. 26 and could easily take over as the best in the franchise’s history if his 2016 campaign becomes the norm.
Until then, former Chargers running back Lionel James is the best Charger to wear the No. 26. Despite only playing five seasons, James tallied 3,340 scrimmage yards and 14 touchdowns.
His biggest season came in 1985 when he had 1,543 scrimmage yards and nine touchdowns. He also had 2,545 all-purpose yards that set an NFL record that wasn’t broken until 2000.
Former Chargers running back Darren Sproles is often compared to James as Sproles was a similar, yet slightly better and modern version of James.
All in all, James is the best No. 26 for now. However, there was not much competition and it could only be a few seasons until Hayward takes a stranglehold of the best No. 26 in the Bolt’s franchise.
