Speculation about the future of quarterback Baker Mayfield has swirled since the Cleveland Browns decided to sign DeShawn Watson from the Houston Texans. The former first overall nominee is definitely out of place in Cleveland right now and doesn’t seem to want to see if Watson will be suspended for long before making a decision.
The Browns are definitely aiming to move Mayfield to another club, but which team could they be? The Minnesota Vikings aren’t the first team that comes to mind, but Dan Graziano has heard rumors that the Vikings could be an “outside-the-box” suggestion for a potential Mayfield trade.
Minnesota Vikings is a professional football team based in Minnesota. They are members of the NFC Northern Conference of the National Football League (NFL). The team was founded as a development team in 1960 and started playing the following year.
With 30 losses, the Vikings hold the NFL record for the most losses after a season in league history. They are the only NFL team to win a combination of regular season and records that haven’t won the Super Bowl yet.
Kwesi Adofo-Mensah was vice president of football operations for the Cleveland Browns for the past two years before becoming general manager of the Minnesota Vikings this summer.
So it’s no surprise that the Vikings have been named a potential destination for some current and former Brown players this summer.
If the Vikings decide to move on from Kirk Cousins, Graziano, one of the league’s executives, believes they should bring in the Browns quarterback this year and make him their starting in 2023.
If the Vikings hadn’t included a no-trade provision in the contract extension they offered Cousins earlier this year, that would have been a great idea.
Minnesota’s best chance of avoiding a dead cap hit of more than $48 million in 2023 would be to trade Cousins. The veteran quarterback is the only one who can determine where he will play after this season, and unless things go horribly wrong this year, he will most likely return to the Vikings in 2023.
If the Vikings were to make a trade for Baker Mayfield, I’d be shocked. He’s in the fifth year of his rookie deal, with a guaranteed salary of $18.9 million. Given Kirk Cousins’ durability, that’s a lot of money for a man who won’t even see the field in Minnesota.
In order for the purple to get him on board, any transaction between the Browns and the Vikings would have to see Cleveland eat a big portion of that compensation number.
The Vikings would most likely be interested in Mayfield if the Browns simply let him go rather than try to trade him. If Mayfield is willing to stay on the bench for the next two seasons, Minnesota may be a more logical landing point for him.
However, as a 27-year-old former first-round selection who has started 59 games in the previous four seasons, backing up Cousins for the next two seasons is probably not something he wants to do.
The Browns, on the other hand, are expected to have enough bidders for Mayfield’s services that they won’t have to let him loose.
Stranger things have happened in sports than the Vikings acquiring Baker Mayfield. But it’s not something I believe has a genuine probability of happening, whether within or outside the proverbial box.
