The Jazz hasn’t done well in the playoffs in recent years. Donovan Mitchell and Rudy Gobert, two of their studs, are at odds.

They might keep their current roster hoping that a new coach can help them with their issues.

Will Hardy, a Celtics assistant, will apparently be in charge of carrying out that duty.

For a new head coach, a five-year contract is exceptionally long. Utah is undoubtedly demonstrating confidence in Hardy with this agreement, even though it is unknown how much of the contract is guaranteed.

Hardy progressed with the Spurs before joining Ime Udoka’s staff with the Celtics in the previous campaign.

Hardy, who was once viewed as a possible Gregg Popovich replacement, demonstrated his adaptability by assisting Boston in making it to the NBA Finals.

But the Jazz hopes to capitalize on that Spurs identity. Quin Snyder, another coach in Popovich’s coaching tree, just left Utah despite efforts to keep him as head coach.

Hardy’s connections to the Celtics may have also been advantageous given Danny Ainge’s position with the Jazz front office.

Hardy’s main challenge will be persuading Mitchell, who has expressed symptoms of discontent. Utah is around the young guard and attempting to win him over.

Winning surely helps to win. To achieve this, Hardy must create a defense that performs better in the postseason (with or without Gobert).

Although there is potential for choices that stress defense, it would be wonderful to maintain the Jazz’s sophisticatedly high-level attack.

Hardy is qualified for the position. Maybe for a very long time, given his age and the organizational culture in Utah.

However, the Jazz doesn’t give him much room to pick up new skills on the job. Hardy, along with Jazz assistant Alex Jensen, Raptors assistant Adrian Griffin, and Celtics assistant Joe Mazzulla, were among the four contenders who met with ownership this week in Salt Lake City.

The Jazz took the place of Quin Snyder, who left his position earlier this month, following a rigorous search that involved at least 15 candidates and was overseen by new CEO Danny Ainge.

After taking over a rebuilding team, Snyder has a 372-264 record in his eight seasons with Utah, which has a current six-year postseason run but hasn’t advanced past the Western Conference semifinals in that time.

Hardy worked as an assistant coach with the Celtics for one season under Ime Udoka, assisting Boston in reaching the NBA Finals.

Hardy, a Division III Williams College graduate, started his career as the San Antonio Spurs‘ video coordinator before being elevated to assistant coach status under Gregg Popovich.

Sources told Wojnarowski that David Fizdale has decided to accept the position of assistant general manager with the Jazz.

After serving for 18 years as a head coach and associate coach in the NBA, Fizdale will transition into management and collaborate closely with Ainge and GM Justin Zanik.
